Details

First Generation college students are those students who are the first in their family to attend college, where neither of their parents has obtained a four-year college degree. First Gens have an identified and measurable lack of cultural, social, and educational capital resulting in a possible deficiency when navigating the path to higher education. They are also very committed to obtaining their college degree and exhibit a tenacity in getting there! First Generation students are blazing a new path for themselves as well as their families and they do not always know what to do, how to do it, or when; ECU has many resources to assist them in their college journey and we will identify those in this session. ECU is now recognized as a First-Gen Forward Institution of Higher Ed.; a distinction we have earned based on our work with First Gen Pirates. ECU and The Office of Student Transitions has offered programs to address specific needs of ECU’s First-Generation student population since the summer of 2013. This orientation session is designed to assist parents and family members in supporting their First-Generation students while they attend East Carolina University.
