The mission of the College of Education is the preparation of professional educators and allied practitioners, including professionals in business information systems, counseling, electronic media, and librarianship. Significant to this mission is a strong commitment to three important related areas, all of which are realized through partnerships and other endeavors. These three areas are:
1. the encouragement and nurturing of professional growth for educators and allied practitioners at all levels and in all areas of the educational endeavor;
2. a continuing emphasis on and support for scholarship and research/creative activity;
3. and service in all areas of professional education.
Critical to such commitment is the promotion of effective teaching; staff participation in the improvement of schools; and, in concert with other state agencies, the development and creation of educational policy for North Carolina.

Connect for Success centralizes university communication to heighten student awareness of academic, financial, and personal well-being. Multiple methods of communication are used to establish connection, including text, chatbot, call center, enrollment coaching, and early success identification. Connect for Success leverages targeted messaging to empower students to achieve academic excellence and thrive. Working collaboratively with campus partners, the Connect for Success program employs four pillars of student success: Connect, Support, Serve, Succeed. Communication apprises students of academic milestones, university rules and regulations, early success alerts, supports student well-being and fosters engagement with peers and with campus resources.

We are a vibrant and energetic collection of teachers, scholars, researchers, and writers. Our department offers four degrees: a B.A. in English; a B.S. in Professional Writing and Information Design; an M.A. in English; a Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Writing, and Professional Communication as well as various minors and certificates. Our community also includes clubs and organizations including the Creative Writing Club.

The Department of Student Engagement is a portfolio of offices, centers, and programs focused on helping students connect to the campus community and fostering student success in college. Each of our units provides opportunities for students to get involved, attend events and programs, establish a support network, and enhance their college experience.

Fraternity and Sorority Life; Ledonia Wright Cultural Center; Student Activities and Organizations; and Women and Gender Office are all located on the first floor of the Main Campus Student Center.

The Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement; Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center, and the Military and Veterans Resource Center can be found on the second floor of the Main Campus Student Center. Each unit is here for every Pirate on campus!

The Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center provides support and a sense of community for students, faculty, staff, and alumni of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. We foster student leadership, as well as personal, academic, and professional growth, through volunteer opportunities and collaborative partnerships across campus. The LGBTQ Center offers a safe and welcoming environment that promotes understanding, acceptance, and visibility of the LGBTQ community through a comprehensive range of educational programming and advocacy services.

Since 2014, more than 2,500 individuals have proudly earned a Bachelor of Science in University Studies (BS-US) from East Carolina University. Offered through the Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, the University Studies major offers a flexible and personalized academic path for learners seeking an option outside of traditional majors at ECU. The BS-US can be completed entirely on-line, or on-campus, and allows students to build on their previous coursework and transfer credits, providing a unique opportunity to tailor their education to fit their personal and professional aspirations. With the support of expert advisors, University Studies students craft an individualized degree that aligns with their academic, career, and/or personal goals.

The Bachelor of Science in University Studies is perfect for students with a higher number of completed credit hours (a minimum of 75 earned hours is required to declare), transfer students, military affiliated students, and “Finish” students (former Pirates who left ECU without a degree) who need a degree that is flexible, personalized, and rewarding.

While earning a bachelor’s degree is a big commitment, the rewards are plentiful and within your reach. A brighter economic future, more career possibilities, and a greater sense of personal fulfillment are all possible with the completion of our BS-US!

Because faculty-student interactions are key to student success, our mission is to create sport programming that would foster community for both students and faculty/staff through pickleball. Due to the exponential growth of the sport across all age-spans and its potential to be an important social institution that fosters belonging, our mission is to development an experiential learning opportunity that would charge ECU sport management graduate students with creating and managing an annual HHP Faculty, Staff, and Student Pickleball tournament.

ENC Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses (RIBN) provides students with a four-year option in which they complete an Associate Degree and Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.

The Eastern North Carolina RIBN program dually admits students to East Carolina University and one of the local community colleges that partner with the ECU College of Nursing.
